State-of-the-art stairlift installed in 400-year old Lincolnshire property
Burghley House near Stamford in Lincolnshire is celebrating the success of its recently upgraded Stannah stairlift which allows less able-bodied visitors to reach the upper floor of England’s greatest Elizabethan house.
The new stairlift on the magnificent ‘Hell Stairs’ has already assisted around 2,500 elderly and wheelchair-bound visitors to scale the grand staircase with ease, since its installation in March.
The ‘Hell Staircase’, which has featured in blockbusters such as the Da Vinci Code and Pride & Prejudice, leads to a series of 11 rooms on the first floor of the house, including the impressive ‘Heaven Room’. Each showcases the work of 17th century Italian artist Antonio Verrio who painted the rooms with breath-taking imagery of ancient gods and goddesses.
In addition to the ‘Hell Stairs’, Burghley has invested in replacing a second Stannah stairlift which provides access to the Orangery restaurant.
Philip Gompertz, House Manager, Burghley House said: “Stannah has been part of the fabric of Burghley House for 25 years, but we have recently invested in updated models to ensure that we are offering our guests the very best access to our extraordinary masterpieces.
“Since the start of the season, we have received excellent feedback from less able-bodied visitors, who can clearly see that we are committed to ensuring Burghley remains an accessible historic attraction.”
Patrick Stannah, joint managing director, Stannah Lift Services said: “As a British-heritage brand, it is always a privilege to install our products in beautiful historical properties such as Burghley House. Our sympathetic designs ensure that even the most modern mobility aids can blend in with the surroundings of elegant listed buildings without being obtrusive.”
